It is very disturbing that it is shutting down
It’s just so sad.†While actress Shilpa Shukla expressed her shock at the development, actress Kalki Koechlin said that she will miss performing at the place and hopes that an alternative comes up soon. "We all had to bid it an emotional farewell. Epicentre, since 2008, had hosted exhibitions, plays, stand-up comedy shows and several art festivals, and over the years had earned the reputation of being the Millennium City’s cultural centre. It is a huge loss to artistes not only based in Delhi but also those who used to come from Mumbai,†said M.
As Epicentre, the popular cultural centre of Gurgaon, closed down on Sunday. While Tom Alter was the last artiste to perform at Epicentre, several stalwarts like Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah had also performed here in the past and enthralled Gurgaon art aficionados with their performances. The centre was run by Old World Hospitality (OWH) that also operates India Habitat Centre in Delhi and OWH couldn’t get their tender extended despite best efforts. It was that meeting point of Gurgaon’s well-travelled art connoisseurs and the artistes.
Wholesale Cube vacuum storage bags The stage where stories and creative passion came alive for years will now fall silent. We had celebrated many festivals there and did our best to promote art and culture in the city.
On Sunday, three plays on Mirza Ghalib starring veteran actor Tom Alter were staged at the Epicentre, Gurgaon. Rishi Mehta, owner of Behroopiya Entertainers, a Gurgaon-based theatre company, says, "It is a big blow to artistes living in this part of the NCR. It’s just sad that we had to leave,†said Mukta Kapoor, corporate head, marketing, OWH.Anupam KherIts lease of nine years expired on Monday, and was not renewed by The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) that runs the Apparel House where the Epicentre is situated. Located near the HUDA City Centre Metro Station, the venue had staged some of the most enthralling performances featuring stalwarts like Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher and Ila Arun, and especially for Gurgaon’s art lovers, it was the place that kept them connected to the world of art in the maddening corporate ambience. "He (Alter) had performed at the venue several times but was not aware of the news.â€.â€
But the worst hit seem to be artistes based in the Millennium City. Also, over the years, Epicentre had given space to many upcoming artistes and they all have lost a wonderful platform to show their art before the world. It was that place where theatre aficionados would come in large numbers and watch ticketed shows and the production team didn’t have to rely on sponsors.Tom AlterKathak exponent Shovana Narayan rued, "Gurgaon badly needs a cultural space but with Epicentre closing down, the only space for exhibiting visual and performing arts is now gone. Actor Yashpal Sharma, who staged his play Koi Baat Chale there, tells us, "It is very disturbing that it is shutting down. Personally, as a theatre artiste based in Delhi, I will now find it difficult to do public shows in Gurgaon. As the lights dimmed after the last act on Sunday evening, the curtains came down on a cultural chapter.Artistes who performed at Epicentre said that they would miss such a well-managed auditorium. He promised the audience members his full support to save the venue if they decided to file a petition for it.
The loud, long applause soon gave way to a sad hush as it was announced that Epicentre was shutting down and the news took even Alter by surprise. Sayeed Alam, director, Pierrot’s Troupe. Now, they would look to find space in Delhi to stage their productions and they would certainly lose their audience based in Gurgaon as people won’t travel a long distance braving massive traffic to watch a play

The prince of change was to frequently descend from the hills
The prince of change was to frequently descend from the hills, chair a provincial decision-making meeting in Lahore, and then be drawn back by the capital. One consequence of the surprise show in Karachi was the selection of Dr Arif Alvi from the city for the grand post of president of Pakistan. There have been no close friends who are charming — or available — to apply for the vacancy, and the effects of their absence are showing.
But that great initiative to clean up the city has also faded since. Sardar Usman Buzdar, the PM’s choice as the chief minister for Punjab, was thought to have one trait that distinguished him from many other candidates. Faisal Vawda jumping to the literal defence of the people, gun in hand and everything, passed too quickly — mercifully for the audience. Imran Khan (Photo: File) In August 2018, as Mr Imran Khan took charge of the country, the more discerning in the crowd were confronted by the sheer emptiness that separated the PTI chief from the provincial power centres. Sorely missed were the Khan lieutenants — politicians — who had the competence and status to look after his political interests in crucial centres away from Islamabad.Especially jarring was the absence of worthy enough PTI politicians in Karachi and Lahore.Especially jarring was the absence of worthy enough PTI politicians in Karachi and Lahore. Karachi made Imran Khan the prime minister.
The desired impression was that of an Imran Khan closely overseeing the working of his chosen Punjab CM, while simultaneously Mr Buzdar was allowed to advertise the PTI’s promotion of new, deserving leadership among the ignored and underprivileged. There have just been too many fronts open for Mr Buzdar and his aides in Lahore to deal with. Post-power in Islamabad, the gentleman has been used rather sparingly as a motorcyclist to flaunt Karachi’s famous free spirit, or as some kind of a counter to the rare moves the PPP government may be planning during its bouts of relative awareness and lucidity. It was left to Ali Zaidi, another ruling-party MNA from Karachi, to actually confirm just how great the scatter was in the teeming megapolis. Imran Ismail was once the PTI’s choice to fight a crucial by-election. This was manifest, for example, in the PTI’s inability to name any worthwhile challengers in its camp to the chief minister’s office in these provinces prior to the 2018 polls. In a kind of coup that has never gone beyond the city, Karachi ensured that it gave Imran Khan the seats without which he would have struggled to form the government. These dangers emanate from the fact that the PTI has been in power in Punjab since fall last year.
Thirteen months later, this crisis of sharp, capable individuals, working as closeassociates of a larger-than-life Khan, persists. There have been no reliable cousins or sons or daughters or a dutiful wife stepping out of the shadows to fill the vacuum, in defiance of
Cube vacuum space bags Manufacturers the ‘normal’ course that political careers of the big politicians take in Pakistan. With his low-profile, silent existence, he was not going to come in the way of the people of Punjab and their PM. They should be insisting the party use its current influence in building and preparing its cadres for representing the people at the local government level, whenever that opportunity arrives.
The PTI could be advised to do the same in Lahore, another extremely important power centre it is struggling to have some leadership in, except that the Imran camp here is faced with rather serious threats that need to be dealt with swiftly.By arrangement with Dawn. All through these months, there were few signs about the emergence of an individual who could be truly trusted to connect the ruled here to their able ruler. This also marked the continuation of a tradition where the exalted office has been entrusted to an individual belonging to, or at least residing in, the biggest city of the country, its commercial capital. Instead, it fell to a non-PTI minister, Senator Farogh Nasim, to hog the headlines. The images of other PTI leaders offering some kind of local leadership here have been equally fleeting. The PTI chief had been denied a similar courtesy elsewhere in the country, especially in the Punjab areas surrounding Lahore — despite the best efforts of hisstrong backers. There was him, the leader, and there were the masses who believed in him and his cause.
That arrangement was doomed from the beginning, especially in a province so used to having a busy high-octane administrator based in Lahore. In recent times, this brilliant formula that envisioned direct Imran Khan rule in Punjab has come under a cloud. To be honest, there would be so many in the city wishing exclusivity, utterly fed up as they must be with all the bad governance they have been subjected to for long

The constitutional provisions have existed since 1992
Why then did the President of India (read the Union government) scramble to
dismiss the government on March 27, just a day before the vote of confidence The
Congress approached the Nainital high court against the dismissal of their
government.Politically motivated manipulation of constitutional powers is not
new.
Consider that the consequence of a state government being dismissed is not
the empowerment of local governments, to pick up the slack and fill the vacuum,
but instead power is sucked back to Delhi where all state-level politicians
aspire to work.
The curious case of Uttarakhand shows that getting elected to
political office confers powers
Cube
vacuum storage bags Factory but no responsibilities. The otherwise placid,
hilly paradise was rocked by frenzied politicking, as Congress dissidents lit a
fire under their own government, even as forest fires lit to clear shed pine
leaves gusted up clouds of carbon and heat.
The honourable single-judge ordered
on March 29, somewhat unusually, that the Congress test its numbers in the House
on March 31 even though the Legislative Assembly had been suspended by the
President of India. The curious case of Uttarakhand shows that getting elected to
political office confers powers but no responsibilities. Would the Uttarakhand
Congress dissidents have been as ready to rebel and trigger the dismissal of
their government if the consequences were that elected leaders at the town and
village levels would get vested with the executive powers of erstwhile state
ministers and carry on working Consider also whether the Union government would
have been as willing a participant in the dismissal game, if the consequences
meant executive powers being transferred lower rather than to the national
level.
A second option to hold politicians to account is to devolve political
office and powers closer to where voters live so that people can actively
participate in overseeing an elected politician. Leading up to November 2000,
when the state was formed, the mood was upbeat and passions inflamed. The hilly
areas of Garhwal and Kumaon had revolted against the allegedly quasi-colonial
rule from Lucknow — the erstwhile city of nawabs, sheermal, galawati kebabs and
the capital of Uttar Pradesh.org, flooded Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
with electronic messages. The "Save the Net†campaign last year and subsequently
supporters of Facebook/Internet. But Indian voters do not have this power,
unlike in North America and Switzerland.
But it fell, because former chief
minister Vijay Bahuguna and Mr Rawat’s ex-buddy from Garhwal, Harak Singh Rawat,
and seven others pulled the plug on it.The writer is adviser, Observer Research
Foundation. What followed was a comedy of high-level bungling. The India-Bharat
class divide exists even in politics. Despite the rhetoric, there is little
political appetite to let go of centralised powers in the Union and the state
governments — both of which function remotely from people.
Technological
improvements can help. Can we do better Being empowered to recall recalcitrant
public representatives can make public representatives responsive to
citizens.Sadly, the five-yearly spells of public accountability do not protect
citizens sufficiently from irresponsible governments. Nor were there difference
with the party around policy, legislation or programmes. Apparently, the average
citizen gets galvanised politically only when it is time to vote.Consider also
how dysfunctional our political parties are. Voters could similarly message the
Election Commission. Equally, it was irresponsible of the Congress, to ignore
the growing dissidence, secure in the belief that the anti-defection legislation
could contain dissidence and that there was still one more year before citizens
could vote to call it to account.Petty palace politics and dodgy moves will
continue to blight political stability and retard effective executive action,
unless we rejig the institutional structure to generate political incentives. The
Harish Rawat-led Congress government still has one year to go. Expectedly, this
order was stayed on appeal by a division bench of the court.
The Speaker, Govind
Singh Kunjwal, disqualified the dissident Congressmen the anti-defection
legislation for voting against the government. It was not always like this. A
significant section — more than a quarter of the Congress MLAs — could not
resolve their grievances through inner-party governance systems and chose to
create a constitutional crisis to hit back at their party. But it is alleged
that he did so only after the President of India had already put him and the
state Legislative Assembly under suspended animation by dismissing the
government. Their rebellion was borne out of perceived insufficient recognition
by the party of their merit, effort and political standing. Our centralised,
political ecosystem and architecture have created political interests at the
national and the state level. They did not act out of high moral principles.True
to their class ethic, state-level politicians perversely prefer to lose power to
an opposing party, in the hope that it would come back to them one day, rather
than see power trickle away permanently down to local levels.
The constitutional
provisions have existed since 1992, but they have never been implemented in good
faith and with full earnestness. Biometric identification can cheaply and
correctly verify discontented voters who could digitally communicate their
intent to recall, thereby triggering a re-election. But consider how low
representative democracy has fallen and how remote politics has become from the
people who chose to remain indifferent to the political machinations. Tellingly,
citizens were more concerned with managing the forest fires than the fallout of
the political shenanigans. Their timing was cannily disruptive since the annual
budget could not be approved — politically effective but irresponsible from a
citizen’s viewpoint.
Citizens must be able to hold governments to account in
real time. Cut to 2016, and the dismissal of a duly elected government evokes no
popular response at all beyond gossip at nukkad teashops. Rarely does a
village-level politician graduate to politics at the state level and even less
so to the national level. Also, subsequent to the budget approval snafu,
governor Krishan Kant Paul had already directed on March 18 that the state
government prove its majority on the floor of the House on March 28

There is an evident lag between shifts and even in manual
As is the case with most compact-SUVs of today, the NuvoSport gets a healthy
dose of cladding as well.To sum up, the NuvoSport&
Cube
vacuum space bags Factory039;s interior is tad disappointing. Do not exceed
the legal speed limit and it does just fine. The trademark Mahindra 'toothy'
grille, air vent on the hood and the large bumper with a faux # skidplate lend
it some aggression.
The tall height and the narrow snout is still quirky. Boot
space is fairly generous — rated at 412 litres.Ride quality is typically
Mahindra. That said, corners aren't the NuvoSport's forte at all. Mahindra was
amongst the first to work around it and not crib about the regulations. Subtle
updates like the smoked out tail-lamps and the new cover for the spare gel well
with the overall theme.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Thane).
The new 16" alloy wheels
are a welcome change.76 lakh (ex-showroom, Thane) that one would pay — the
TUV300 feels a lot more value for money in comparison. If you are keen on buying
the AMT variant over the 5-speed manual, bear in mind that the AMT's job is to
relieve your left leg of its clutch duties — nothing more. While we are on the
subject, we wish Mahindra had equipped it with a reverse camera. But that did
not stop them from having a go again.
On a highway stint, there's enough torque
in reserve for it to not feel breathless. How different is it from its sibling
More importantly, is there more to it than the fancy dress Let's take a
look!DesignLet's not mince words here. The most noticeable addition is the 6. If
you have Size 11 shoes like I do, prepare to be slightly uncomfortable. It isn't
exactly quick off the line. Drive it with a steady and light right foot and the
AMT makes the drive a relatively fuss-free experience.
Just like the Renault
Duster, one cannot buckle up with the driver side armrest in
place.PerformanceUnder the aggressively styled bonnet, lies a 1. As was the case
with the Xylo and the old Scorpio, the NuvoSport too does a shimmy on start-up
and shut-down. Moreover, there aren’t seatbelts or lap belts either. We'd have
loved some more feedback from the pedal and a little less nose-diving under hard
braking.
Thankfully, it now gets a new chunky steering that houses buttons for
the audio and the calls. The NuvoSport is ideal for a broken road infested city
like Mumbai. The newer chassis and the updates make the NuvoSport what the
Quanto should have been in the first place.5-litre, 3-cylinder engine called the
'mHawk100'.
It rocks from side to side, which might be slightly uncomfortable
for the occupants. The side and the rear remain virtually unchanged. It sits
flush with the centre console at an almost upright angle, because of which using
the system on the go isn't the easiest thing to do. All three occupants will
have sufficient knee-room and shoulder-room. This particular top-spec N8 AMT
variant doesn't seem to justify the INR 9. The other key issue here is quality.
The pedals too, are slightly off-set to the right. Mahindra has also gone ahead
and added leatherette (faux leather) upholstery and an updated instrument
cluster to the package as well. It shivers, and one can feel vibrations on the
pedals and the gearstick. Of course, it is a 5+2 seater, just like the TUV300.
It forms an eyebrow over the headlamps and does look cool. Also, if you are
close to six feet tall, you will find you forehead brushing against the
C-Pillar. We expected Mahindra to price the NuvoSport aggressively, undercutting
the Brezza and the EcoSport substantially. We're sure the manual will be much
better in this regard. Weaving in and out of traffic isn't its forte thanks to
the size, but the steering does take the sting out of it. It is carried over
from its sibling, the TUV300 and runs a different state of tune.
There are a
couple of ergonomic issues as well. It takes a good second to realize there's an
urgent need for power. Mahindra was amongst the first to work around it and not
crib about the regulations. However, you will have to plan your overtakes. We'd
recommend you use the third row only when it is an absolute necessity. What the
NuvoSport brings in abundance, is space.Drive the NuvoSport around and you'd
quickly realize that it is at ease pottering around the city calmly. On a
related note, they are bright and grab attention even under the noon sun. The
engine comes alive with a characteristic 3-cylinder clatter.VerdictThe NuvoSport
is a much better package than the Quanto — that's a given.
The sub 4-metre rule
has been a curveball for most manufacturers. Like we said, maintain a steady
right foot, don't force it to pick-up its frock and run — and it does just fine.
The power steering is light at city speeds that make parking and maneuvering the
NuvoSport an easy task. You can recline the second row and lounge, but you will
need to tuck the third row of seats away to do so. Our favourite element, have
to be the LED daytime running lamps. The only complaint here is the backrest
angle. Also, the accelerator and the brake pedal are closely spaced. Considering
it goes up against the likes of the Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport, we wish
Mahindra had brought a better package to the table. But like we said — that's
not the point! We have to say — turbo lag is well under control and power
delivery is linear. While Mahindra did a decent job with the KUV100 and the
TUV300, the quality of materials, fit and finish in the NuvoSport can be termed
average at best. After tasting success with the TUV300, Mahindra has now slid the
NuvoSport into the fray. After tasting success with the TUV300, Mahindra has now
slid the NuvoSport into the fray. If space, power, and a cushiony ride are your
key criterions, the NuvoSport is the one to pick!. The seats themselves aren't
all that comfortable and do not hold you in place. The Quanto's interiors looked
outdated even back then, and carrying the same design in 2016 is a bit of a
no-no.The 240Nm of torque kicks in at a relatively low 1600rpm, which makes
in-city driveability an absolute breeze. Sadly, that isn't the
case.InteriorMahindra might have just made a huge blunder by not updating the
design inside. Seating three in the rear bench is hardly a task too. The
suspension is soft and will iron out bumps and potholes at low speeds — very few
filter into the cabin. Treat it like an XL sized commuter, and it won't
disappoint. But, on the whole, the design is cohesive and digestible now. With
100 horses and 240Nm of torque at its disposal, the NuvoSport is the most
powerful SUV in its segment. Space in the first two rows is more than adequate,
even for someone who isn't in the best of shapes.
There is an evident lag
between shifts and even in manual, the gear changes take a second to reflect.
You can glide over the potholes and irregularities without worrying too much.
There's no running away from the fact that the NuvoSport when viewed side on,
still looks like a Xylo with a chopped derriere.2-inch touchscreen infotainment
system, that is a straight lift from the Ssangyong Rexton. Look towards the
Vitara Brezza or the Ford EcoSport if you intend on attacking the twisties. The
compact-SUV rides on meaty 215 section tyres that give it a butch stance.
Braking power is adequate, but the pedal does leave you guessing at times. The
Mahindra believes in chugging along calmly. Yes, it scores high on practicality
and space — but leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to quality and
features. The AMT is slow to respond with the throttle pinned to the floor. It
is simply a bit too upright for our liking. The new chassis from the Scorpio has
helped contain the body roll a fair bit. The dimensions are nearly identical to
the outgoing Quanto. Now, we'd agree that the initial offerings such as the
Verito Vibe and the Quanto were rather forgettable. The biggest and most
noticeable change is the reworked face. The front profile no longer reminds us
of the old Xylo. It does not roll as much as the Quanto would. The dead pedal
too is quite thin and is barely usable if you have large feet. You do not get
that surge of boost like you would, say in the Vitara Brezza.Mahindra was
amongst the first to work around it and not crib about the regulations.
At
highway speeds, the ride is slightly choppy. Prices for the NuvoSport start at
INR 7. There is absolutely no point trying to extract performance out of it —
especially from the AMT variant. Like most automated manuals, the 'autoshift'
gearbox on the NuvoSport doesn't do much to suppress shift-shocks. The Quanto
was a bit of an oddball, wasn't it Thankfully, the NuvoSport isn't as
outlandish. Rearward visibility is an issue due to the tall height and the thick

This husband is more an exception than a rule
Well, from what I see around me in Mumbai, and what is probably the case in all
the metros and modern cities in India even, is that the equation has certainly
changed with dramatic implications that break the traditional glass ceiling. My
question is, should love and marriage become all about being obsessed with
running a house, which can drain you from other creative pursuits that stimulate
the mind and ambition? More on this next time.
Even in the US, the citadel of
modernity as we Indians see it, men seem to have imprinted in their minds as a
footprint in cement that the pretty little wife is perennially in apron strings
baking the apple pie and dropping the babies to school, doing the washing, with
the permanent vacuum cleaner and mop -displaying proudly the shining clean
toilet seat and sink of the bathroom.
They study hard to get somewhere and have
much ambition to start with. In nuclear families today, where both partners
venture out to employment increasingly women have nudged the traditional mindset
of men incorporating them into some feasible partnership in the home hearth and
children responsibility. Never mind their global exposure to education,
capabilities and their abilities to fit the high echelons of the corporate world
as this young lady was.Should love and marriage become all about being obsessed
with running the house? This can drain you from other creative pursuits. He also
boils the drinking water, and personally washes their school going sons white
shirts to get them that perfect white.
Women today, especially the younger lot
have flung age old traditions to the breezes. The corollary to this however, is
that men seem to have a fixed image of the ‘wife’ as the ‘homemaker’ and
entirely responsible for ‘running’ a home and all the added responsibilities of
children, washing machine, putting food on the table and keeping out the
slippers by the armchair with the TV remote and a cup of tea in the evening.
Cube
vacuum storage bag Men seem to have a fixed image of the ‘wife’ as the
‘homemaker’ and entirely responsible for ‘running’ home and all added
responsibilities.Certainly in Mumbai I am seeing change creep in, I know a young
man who creates a beautiful breakfast for a wife who sleeps in late in the
mornings and then she whizzes off to her office because he is self-employed and
supervises the maid and the house cleaning. The writer is a columnist, designer
and brand consultant.
Girls are go getters with intelligence, they are smart,
intelligent, and look forward to a life of more than just home and hearth. It
does seem strange to the thinking mind that this should be so. They still have
huge expectations from women in a marriage, to run a home, run the children, run
the laundry, run everything first before running their own dreams and desires.
It is astounding that even modern women are still accepting outmoded roles and
women still have to fight for equal rights and shared responsibilities, for a
partnership that defines a marriage. A modern trendy lady in hot pants answered
to a query "umm I’m actually just a housewife†half apologetically accepting the
eons old traditional mindset that women are of course to be relegated to the
role of homemakers.com.
The senior journalist well known for his traditional
attire of khadi kurta pajama, Kolhapuri chappals and bald pate, defining his
seniority surprised us with his take. Never mind that she has also come back
from a demanding day at her place of employment. She comes home and takes over
the dinner quotient, but at least it’s a fair bargain. Mail her at
nishajamvwal@gmail.†He has seen the picture as it is with his vast exposure,
relevant to the realities around. And she is the main bread winner too in some
cases, and even more accomplished perhaps. This is a partnership. For a wife to
be dumped with the entire load of the home is not really how women see marriage
today.
This husband is more an exception than a rule, but this is how it should
be done. But it is a fact that men are more often left far behind in the culture
mindset wagon.Further research shows me that this is not only an Indian
scenario. We were at a swish dinner with a senior esteemed editor on the table.
Should it just end up in a life of housekeeping? We are living in a transitional
age, where both things coexist, change is indeed happening

The plan includes control of vehicular emissions
The report evaluated 24 indicators including air quality, water and sanitation, biodiversity and habitat, forests, climate and energy among others. We have asked state governments to come up with their action plans to curb air pollution.75 out of 100.While India stood at 177, down from 141 in 2016, its score for air quality was recorded at a mere 5. Experts have stated that there has been significant rise in the PM10 level over the years, which comes mostly from dust particles. The CPCB officials maintained that the air quality in north India shows the worst pollution level but it could be attributed to the weather conditions. Even there are no complete data of PM2. The report was published to coincide with the World Economic Forum gathering at Davos on Tuesday. Moderate annual air quality was recorded at 29 cities, while 13 cities recorded poor annual air quality.â€Worse affected cities- Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Kanpur, Delhi, Lucknow, Gaya, Noida, Pithampur, Varanasi, Faridabad, PatnaEPI report stated deaths attributed to PM 2.The NGO has evaluated the data by the Central Board of Pollution Control (CPCB) and Environment Ministry.Moderate annual air quality was recorded at 29 cities, while 13 cities recorded poor annual air quality.."While 60 per cent of the cities were recorded with PM10 levels above the standard in 2007, now 88 per cent of them are critically polluted.
The plan includes control of vehicular emissions, road and construction dust, air pollution from biomass burning, industrial pollution among othersNo city in low pollution category, say expertsWith the recent World Environment Performance Index report stating that India needs to provide urgent attention to its air quality crisis, experts have stated that number of cities with critical levels of PM10 (particulate matter) have increased over the years. We have also suggested mechanised vacuum sweeping of roads,†said D."In terms of curbing dust pollution from roads and construction work, we are formulating action plan Travel Vacuum Space Bag Manufacturers for the creation of green buffers along the traffic corridors. Saha, head of air quality lab, CPCB.While the CPCB officials stated that they have directed all the states to come up with 42-point action plan to curb air pollution, none of the states have yet come up with the plan, except Maharashtra. When the levels are going that higher, meeting the standard level is the need of the hour,†said Anumita Roychowdhary, head of air pollution programme, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Delhi. (Photo: PTI) Mumbai: India ranked the fourth lowest out of 180 nations in terms of environment as per the Environmen-tal Performance Index (EPI), according to the latest report by Yale and Columbia universities.
The pollution levels are going very high, 80 per centof the cities that we monitored are recording levels that are officially classified as critical in terms of particulate matters. There is drastic fall in the number of cities complying with the standard limit and there no cities are in the low pollution category now,†said Anumita Roychowdhary, head of air pollution programme, CSE. The CPCB officials maintained that the air quality in north India shows the worst pollution level but it could be attributed to the weather conditions.5 for many cities. As per the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a Delhi based non-government organisation, only 2 per cent of the monitored 44 cities had PM10 levels within the standard limit in 2016.The current state of the country’s air quality reveals that only seven cities come under the satisfactory annual average air quality, as per the latest report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).5 have risen and estimated at 1,640,113, annually as per Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, 2017CPCB has directed all the states to come up with 42-point action plan to curb air pollution.Meanwhile, D Saha, head of air quality laboratory, CPCB, said, "Although the AQI levels have decreased in certain cities, it is difficult to estimate whether or not more cities in the country now have satisfactory air quality."Despite government action, pollution from solid fuels, coal and crop residue burning, and emissions from motor vehicles continues to degrade the air quality for millions of Indians,†read the report

With the ascendance of the BJP
Earlier, violence was limited to Kannur. Now the Kannur syndrome is spreading to
all parts of Kerala. Police guard the entrance to Pinarayi village following a
political killing in the area. (Photo: Asian Age) The paradox of politics in
Kerala is that all political parties swear by non-violence and democracy but, to
ensure that their writ alone runs, they resort to unspeakable violence.
May be
this is because once they set off on the path to violence it is difficult or
impossible for the political party to move away from it. It is like holding the
proverbial tiger’s tail. Once a death squad tastes blood, they are inclined to
disregard even the diktats of their leaders. The monsters of Frankenstein do no
one’s bidding.Vested interests make capital out of the situation, and the whole
atmosphere is permeated with violence. Political parties, including the CPM and
the BJP, ensure the backing of criminal elements. The all-party conferences give
lip service to democratic methods, but in the confines of their own party
offices they ask their cadres to dump homilies.
In the course of time the public
turns indifferent to politics, bringing anarchy and uncertainty. As early as
1921, when Mahatma Gandhi appealed for non-cooperation and civil disobedience,
leaders like Chettoor Shankaran Nair had warned that once the people are taught
to disobey laws, it would be difficult to bring them back as law abiding
citizens. Chettoor Shankaran Nair also wrote a book titled ‘Gandhi and Anarchy’,
warning of the addictive properties of disobedience. However, with Mahatma
Gandhi’s moral authority reigning supreme, such advice fell on deaf ears.
Throughout the freedom struggle, Gandhiji insisted on non-violence, but violence
continued unabated. The Quit India movement in 1942, when Gandhiji and Congress
lost faith in the British declarations about the concept of Rule of Law, the
Congress itself had given the call for creating a democratic constitution with
fundamental rights and directive principles. But during
Vacuum bag Indira Gandhi’s time, when
she felt her power was threatened by Jayaprakash Narayan’s movement, she
declared Emergency which in effect meant the suspension of constitutional
rights.
It is important to note that the struggle against Emergency was not led
by the highly literate people of Kerala but by the relatively illiterate people
of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.Read: Violence as political tool keeps cadre
intactThere is an innate democratic tradition among the people of India born out
of the panchayat system, but both parties on the right and the left resorted to
violence in search of power.
Though BJP on one hand and the Marxist party, on
the other, swear by secularism and tolerance, the rank and file of all parties
are in league with criminal elements. Even though some leaders may genuinely
stand for tolerance, their followers might consider it too meek. The Marxist
Communist Parties have an innate tendency to follow violence in the name of
revolutionary spirit. Today the Congress has weakened itself by promoting
dynastic supremacy.
Though Sonia Gandhi was able to control the different groups
in the Congress her idea of promoting Rahul Gandhi has destroyed the goodwill of
Congress. The Communist-Marxist parties have not been able to overcome their
internal conflicts. The degeneration of Congress has created a vacuum and no
alternative is provided by other parties. The Communists are committed to
violence in the name of revolution and the Congress has now developed an
obsession with dynastic succession. No other party has the general acceptance
and goodwill of the people necessary to prevent anarchy and lawlessness.
Consumerism has gained upper hand in society and money power has destroyed even
the last vestiges of idealism in social and political life. In the
circumstances, India has become conflict-ridden society, confusion and
uncertainty prevails in politics, and there is no leader who can show the people
a way out of the mess.
With the ascendance of the BJP, a path to dictatorship
through democracy might soon be opened. The signs are loud and clear. Recent
attempts to win power through undemocratic means and the spreading of hate among
masses for political gains, hints at a complex era in the making. Hate campaigns
and violence have been employed to build the bridge to power. You have to
remember that Nazi and Fascist leaders came to power in the first instance by
feigning allegiance to socialism and democracy.

The cost or even the effort to deploy human therapists
With deeper researches happening in AI and its related areas, far more use cases
will emerge in the HR space. The AI enterprise space is estimated to reach an
overall 6000 million USD. (Photo: Pixabay) Every time there is a tech buzzword,
there is the inevitable rush to adopt it. Remember the ‘everything dot com’
phase in the early 2000’s and the e-commerce boom of about last decade where
every shop was turned into an online marketplace. It is little surprise that
with AI and machine learning emerging as the newest trends, every other company
has been rushing to put together AI blueprints. Almost every industry has seen a
flurry of use cases in AI adoption – and the HR space has not been lagging. The
AI enterprise space is estimated to reach an overall 6000 million USD and a
sizeable chunk of enterprise AI applications is likely to be in HR.There are a
number of applications in various stages of the HR process from chatbots used in
onboarding to applications that sort through CVs or monitor employee
performance. However, with deeper researches happening in AI and its related
areas, far more use cases will emerge in the HR space. And,
China
vacuum compressed bag it promises to go beyond the standard resume sorting
to applications that blend cognitive thinking, deep learning and smarter
self-adaptive programs.
Here are five impact areas that the Rimjhim Ray
(co-founder, Spotle.ai) thinks will see AI being harnessed to fuller potential
in the talent-opportunity space.Potential Predictors:We hire for potential, we
have heard a lot of managers and recruiters say this. But how do you do that?
Are 30 sec CV scans enough to gauge potential? Probably not. What can help here
is benchmarking potential candidates with your highest performers and base your
decisions on pattern matches. Possibly a background in NCC and not high grades
is what distinguishes most of your top employees. If you are scanning and
rejecting CVs based on grades here you are losing out on your highest
performers. Sentiment Analytics :AI is being used more and more to gauge
sentiments and construct personality maps based on the humongous amount of
social media content we create everyday. Sentiment analytics can also be applied
to resumes, cover letters and at the risk of sounding pervasive to emails and
chat messages. Understanding sentiments and personalities help going beyond the
standard grade and experience based fitment and look at deeper aspects like
cultural fits.Goodbye CVs. Hello, Faces (AI + AR):If the last 5 years was about
multiple disciplines like AI and AR emerge as strong independent drivers, the
next 5 years will see many more cross-disciplinary applications. In an
inter-connected social world, one dimensional CVs are increasingly getting
replaced by social graph – a matrix of your digital footprints. Superimpose that
with a person’s face and a person can just walk into an interview with his best
face forward, get scanned by an intelligent camera and the interviewer will see
possibly the person’s last tweets or his Github ratings floating over him. This
we can confirm is not Sci-fi. Face recognition can also be used to understand
emotions and offer predictive counselling. Obviously like with any use of tech,
what is doable has to be balanced by what is acceptable. A lot of people may
find machines scanning your faces and getting a low-down on your background or
mood pretty intrusive.Empathetic Counsellors :Workplace stress is the single
biggest killer of productivity. With increased impacts of modern life and work
styles on mental health, psychological disorders have emerged as the costliest
condition in many economies including the US.
The cost or even the effort to
deploy human therapists for all staff may be prohibitive however advancement in
AI means you can have virtual therapists which can simulate first-level
counselling. The anonymity of talking to a digital therapist also could be
helpful for employees in a country where mental health is a taboo. AI-based
counselling can also be deployed in career counselling where a chatbot can guide
you on your competency paths.
Personalised Coaches:Combine gamification and AI
and you can build fantastic career coaches for your employees. Take the examples
of fitness apps – they have used gamification in a novel way to help people
attain their fitness goals. A virtual career coach can set adaptive goals for
your employees, build learning paths for them, dish out rewards all building
engagement while making appraisal processes less tedious.— Rimjhim Ray,

The critical warning had last been used
It was the United Kingdom&
Wholesale
Cube vacuum storage bags039;s fifth terror attack in six months, a series
that has claimed 35 lives. The home-made bomb shot flames through a packed train
carriage at west London’s Parsons Green Tube station during the Friday morning
rush hour but apparently failed to detonate fully. (Photo: AP) London: Police
stepped up their investigation Monday into the bombing of a packed London
Underground train during rush hour after officers made a second arrest in their
probe. The bomb went off on Friday's morning in a crowded carriage and although
the device is thought to have malfunctioned, it still wounded 30 people. Britain
downgraded on Sunday the nation's terrorism threat from its highest level
following the arrest. It was the country's fifth terror attack in six months, a
series that has claimed 35 lives.Police said earlier Sunday that a 21-year-old
man, who has not been identified, was detained late Saturday in Hounslow, on the
western rim of the capital."The Joint Terrorist Analysis Centre, which reviews
the threat level that the UK is under, have decided to lower that level from
critical to severe," interior minister Amber Rudd said in a televised
statement.A critical threat level means another attack is "expected imminently"
while a severe threat indicates an assault is highly likely.A search was
underway on Sunday in Stanwell, a few miles west of Hounslow, in connection with
the 21-year-old's arrest, police said. After taking into custody an 18-year-old
man earlier on Saturday over the "bucket bomb" attack at the Parsons Green
Underground station, police said they they were hunting for more suspects.Rudd
said the police were trying to find out how the first man arrested was
"radicalised".The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for Friday's
explosion. The first arrest on Saturday took place at the Dover ferry terminal, a
main link to Europe. A "number of items" were recovered during the operation and
the man is now in custody in London, officers said.Police also raided a home in
Sunbury, a town west of London on Saturday. Local residents quoted in British
media said the owners of the house were elderly foster parents.CCTV footage
obtained by British media on Sunday appeared to show a man walking from the
property on Friday morning, carrying a bag similar to the one containing the
failed device.- Passengers flee in panic -Now that the terror threat has been
downgraded, soldiers deployed to guard key sites across the country "will return
to their original positions" during the next few days, Rudd said.
The critical
warning had last been used after the deadly suicide bombing at a pop concert in
the northwestern city of Manchester in May, for which IS also claimed
responsibility. But Rudd voiced doubt over the IS claim that it was behind
Friday's bombing."It is inevitable that so-called Islamic State or Daesh will
try to claim responsibility but we have no evidence to suggest that yet," she
told the BBC.Rudd had earlier dismissed as "pure speculation" US President
Donald Trump's claim, made Friday on Twitter, that a "loser terrorist" behind
the attack was known to Scotland Yard. The tweet had already drawn a terse rebuke
from Prime Minister Theresa May, who said: "I never think it's helpful for
anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation."In another security
scare on Sunday, a # London-bound British Airways flight was evacuated at
Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport after a false bomb alert.
The improvised device
at Parsons Green, a quiet and well-off residential district, failed to detonate
fully. But the blast inflicted flash burns on passengers, and prompted dozens of
others to flee in panic.- 'Fireball flew down carriage' -Twitter user @Rrigs
posted pictures of a white bucket smouldering on the train and described how a
"fireball flew down carriage and we just jumped out open door".The bucket, which
was inside a frozen food bag, looked like the type used by builders, and there
appeared to be wires coming from it.Louis Hather, 21, had been travelling to
work and was three carriages down from where the explosion took place."
I could
smell the burning. Like when you burn plastic," he told AFP.He was trampled on
as panicking passengers stampeded out of the station, leaving him with a bad cut
and bruised leg.The bomb's remnants were examined by forensic scientists but no
further details were released.Several victims were taken to hospital, though
health authorities said none were in a life-threatening condition.

And of course there will be a delay
The main point of the mission was to measure the mass of the object, because
this is how you really measure the deflection," said Michel. With a camera and
miniaturised satellite, the new AIM will have a much reduced payload -- minus a
lander and radars to probe the moon&
Vacuum space bag39;s internal
structure.Larger than a bomb But the methods must be tested and refined with
real-life practice runs to prepare for "if we actually have to deflect an
asteroid some day.
Two or three years (after impact), these things won't
change," said Michel. It is about 160 metres (525 feet) wide, the size of an
object that would hit Earth with the equivalent force of 400 megatonnes of TNT,
"more than the largest hydrogen bomb," said Cheng."European Space Agency boss
Jan Woerner told AFP "we will go forward with a new proposal" for the next
ministerial meeting in 2019."There are measurements that AIM can make that DART
cannot," said Cheng."We have never # tested asteroid deflection and there is no
way we can test in (the) laboratory.. But we found something I think that still
works and allows to relax the very tight schedule.
The new price tag? About 210
million euros, said Patrick Michel, the science lead for the European part of
the project."Scientists from both sides of the Atlantic urged European congress
participants to sell the project to their national representatives. In its new
form, AIM could still do these crucial measurements even if NASA sticks to its
own timeline and hits Didymoon in 2022."It is important for humanity, as a
species we have the means today to deflect an asteroid. (Photo: AFP) Space
scientists urged Europe Wednesday to rethink its withdrawal from a futuristic,
international dry-run for an Armageddon-like mission to deflect a space rock on
a calamitous collision course with Earth. He is the project scientist for the
American part of the AIDA mission, named Double Asteroid Redirection Test
(DART), which has entered Phase B -- meaning it has been approved but still
needs final confirmation.
And of course there will be a delay. It's not a
question of if, but when," he said by email..""We have not discovered any
asteroid that is actually coming to Earth," said Cheng, but "we may still
discover one" among the thousands of hazardous space rocks believed to be out
there. that we have the two at the same time.Dubbed AIDA (Asteroid Impact &
Deflection Assessment), the test mission is crucial if we are to develop the
capacity to protect our planet from incoming projectiles, they said.At the
meeting in the Latvian capital, European scientists proposed an altered,
slightly cheaper alternative for AIM. We can do something," stressed
Cheng.Europe's contribution, to send a small craft close to the action to
measure the crash and its impact, suffered a setback when space ministers
rejected a 250-million-euro ($300-million) funding request last December.An
asteroid that exploded in the atmosphere over Siberia in 2013 injured some 1,600
people. We know it will happen, one day sooner or later. We need to know if our
models are correct, (whether) our simulations work as expected. The test mission
is crucial if we are to develop the capacity to protect our planet from incoming
projectiles.Didymos's moon Didymoon, the target of the AIDA mission, falls in an
even more dangerous size range.
The project was called AIM, for Asteroid Impact
Mission."This is the kind of disaster that could be a tremendous catastrophe,"
Andrew Cheng from Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory told AFP
at a European Planetary Science Congress in Riga. An asteroid that exploded in
the atmosphere over Siberia in 2013 injured some 1,600 people."Of course it's
better.Unlike most other natural hazards, an asteroid strike "is something that
the world is able to defend.DART will entail smashing a spacecraft into the tiny
moon of a faraway asteroid dubbed Didymos to alter its trajectory -- a
scientific first."We all together have to convince the national delegations to
spend some money for this mission," added ESA's Michael Kueppers

the rest of the mission goes as well, India will become the fourth nation —
after the United States, Russia and China — to land on the moon, more than
384,000 km away. A roaring thunder echoed across the sky after the rocket

communicating across such far distances, the engineers and scientists at mission

Currently, if an antenna is not perfect, you have to live with it, with the
losses,†said Tamir. That may not sound like much, but those are two major
hurdles that have limited satellite operators for years.â€.The way he hopes to do
it is by using a parachute-like antenna that deploys once in space.
This type
of solution will conquer the market, because it addresses some of the most
serious and bothersome issues for satellite operators,†said David Pollack,
Spacecom’s chief executive.Spacecom, which is collaborating with Facebook to
beam Internet services to Africa, said that if the new Skyfi antenna is
successful, it would be in huge demand. The two technology leaders are working on
ways to beam Internet access from the sky to remote areas, Google with
high-flying balloons and Facebook with a combination of drones and larger, more
complex satellites.
While the company says it has a working "proof of conceptâ€,
the technology has yet to be proven in space, so don’t expect a fleet of
Internet-providing nanosatellites for at least a few years. But it will take an
orbiting cluster of 60 miniature, or nano, satellites, each about the size of a
shoe box, to provide full coverage of earth, said Raz Itzhaki Tamir, a veteran
of Israel’s aerospace industry who co-founded Skyfi four years ago. "We can
change that and be flexible, thus gaining more revenue from the

Skyfi is looking to outflank Facebook and Google in a race to provide worldwide
Internet access by developing the first self-correcting antenna that can turn
mini-satellites into powerful transmitters covering the globe.
For now, Skyfi is
perfecting its system by testing a large version of the antenna in a
50-square-meter (yard) echoless chamber that simulates the conditions of space.
The antenna can then mechanically adjust itself for imperfections in the
transmitter’s surface, allowing a stronger signal to pass, and even alter the
direction it points should broadcast needs change over the course of the
satellite’s life.Thousands of new satellites will be launched into space in the
coming decade and many will use technology from Israel, which has built on its
military expertise to capture a sizeable chunk of the growing commercial space
market, particularly in the field of miniaturisation.
It plans to launch its
first unit in the next 18 months.Skyfi raised $3 million in a round led by
Jerusalem Venture Partners, one of the country’s most successful venture capital
funds, and says it has signed letters of intent to sell its antennas to global
players such as Lockheed Martin and Spacecom. But the antenna alone could be big
business in the meantime
